Sharon Delblanc
I grew up in rural areas around Edmonton, where I now reside. My passion for the dramatic prairie sky and elusive light was kindled during long hours on horseback exploring the farming communities where I grew up. I currently live close to the North Saskatchewan River valley. Daily early-morning and late-afternoon forays along the riverbanks help maintain my spiritual connection with nature and feed my fascination with light, atmosphere, and spatial relationships.
The
inspiration for my painting is grounded in the traditions of the Romantic
period and the French Impressionists, however, I feel an even stronger link
to the work of Scandinavian artists from around the end of the nineteenth
century. Not only do these accomplished artists speak through my own Scandinavian
heritage, but also in their beautiful and lesser-known legacies I find a bond
with the unique light and atmosphere of the Northern Hemisphere. I find similar
expression of moody, lyrical compositions in the works of many of these artists,
especially Anna Archer, Peder Kroyer, and Christian Krohg. Their works often
comprise simple forms filled with the dramatic light and subtle colours so
common to the prairie skies and landscapes. In addition, the cultural anxieties
of today's Canadian prairie communities echo the Nordic struggles with cultural
identity these works frequently express. Thus these Nordic artists connect
with the narrative and cultural components so frequently expressed in my work.
