Artist Statement

According to the artist Robert Motherwell, art is the means by which an artist "weds oneself to the world". That implied state of disconnection from the world and the desire we have for connection is at the heart of my work.

I attempt to recreate a sense of those moments that deliver an intense awareness of our interconnection with the world. That connection happens most intensely for me through the act of drawing. It is both through the intense and prolonged looking involved, and through engagement with material. The immediacy of drawing allows a direct transference of thought, observation, intuition and response, whether I am applying charcoal to paper, or flame to a wood surface.

Although my work often begins as landscape, my intention is not simply to capture the appearance of a particular place, but a sense of the rhythms and pulse of being there.

I think of drawing as a transparent process that documents a journey, one's thoughts, perceptions and associations. Regardless of the medium, the direct act of making a mark upon a surface provides the immediacy, responsiveness and spontaneity that I seek in my work. The hand explores and remembers - it plays among the rocks, dips into the pools, feels the wind, hears the gulls, the surf and the silence.
