The paintings of Jim Visser sum up an attitude of directness. Primarily a
painter of the landscape, his paintings evoke a spirituality of earth, light
and space. They display a love for the environment and move the viewer to
experience the spiritual depth of the subject presented. His images of the
prairie and mountains take on a mood suggested by the nature of the available
light and the drama of the sky. The visual maturity of his images and the
literacy of his brushwork in terms of instrumentation and evocation of mood
amount to paintings that feel forthright and energetic. They are his special
language of expression resulting in an individual, unique identity.
It is no surprise the paintings suggest a passion for our natural surroundings. That's because Jim has spent a good part of his life as an active farmer and environmentalist. He continues to participate in conservation initiatives.
He received his formal instruction from the Fine Arts Department, University of Alberta, Faculty of Extension. A full range of course work was spread over a period of twenty years. Building on the discipline of learning he is demonstrating a commitment to a journey of creativity.
Jim also believes in painting as a fellowship of exchange. To interact with other artists is important to him. It leads to dialogue, critique and encouragement. You will often find him on field trips with others or in retreat residencies or workshops. He seeks out such challenges for growth and enrichment. He says they are great for sustaining initiative and fuel the creative spirit. He reflects that to paint is a gift. It is a gift of time and space and a gift of privilege.
