Scott Gallery congratulates on her prize-winning entry in the "Art of the Book" exhibition, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artist Guild.
"There is much to explore and marvel at when it comes to the handcrafted book arts: detailed binding, letterpress printing, calligraphy, paper marbling and box making. "The very best artists'books are like a dynamic interplay between object, narrative and performance," says Robert Desmarais, assistant special collections librarian. "The container is an organic part of the book and it has its own meaning. You'd never put a Kindle (e-book reader) on display." A lot of the artists' work reveals their concern for the environment. Martha Cole, a textile and book artist living on the Prairies in Saskatchewan, is concerned about how little undisturbed land is left in the province. "I'm always about saving the planet," she says. Cole's prize-winning entry, What are we doing to the land?, is a layered collage. The first layer is a digital image of disturbed land at the edge of a wheat field. Cole then altered the image with coloured pencils and paint, hand-stitching bits of wheat straw to add a "chaotic harshness" to the work. Handwritten messages on silk were stitched on last."

The artists created the works with patients, family and healthcare workers in mind; their intent is to provide a respite, or a ‘restful place’, for those being tested (or testing) for heat disease. To that end, they selected scenes and subjects that represent the diverse nature and history of Alberta - ones for the viewer/reader to recognize as familiar and comforting. The scenes are rendered from their own travel and experience within Alberta, as well as personal knowledge and research. A work from the series is available at Scott Gallery
