Jim Stokes
"Sky Paintings with Notes on Blue"
In this new series of works, Alberta artist Jim Stokes continues his exploration of prairie skies, fields, and landscapes. Nearing abstraction, each piece evokes a unique sense of time and place through the use of colour and light, Stokes achieves this by searching out the best prairie locations in a diverse variety of conditions. He aims to create an impression of wholeness that captures the rare quality of light in northern Alberta.
The simple composition and painterly brushwork convey the contrast between prairie sky and ground in a profound response to the landscape. Stokes creates an expressive sense of physical palpability in his work by emphasizing the material quality of the paint itself.
