Artist
Statement
In our complex, technological world, often it is nature that anchors all of
us to the essential humanity we share. Drawing is my way of responding to this
dynamic power. I start by exploring a place first-hand; getting off the beaten
track on extensive backcountry hikes. By carrying my supplies to the mountaintops
and working on site, I can record my actual experiences.
Using ink, watercolour or oil, I record both my studied observations and automatic responses to underlying structures, surface forms, light and colour. Through the discipline of the visual arts, I can explore the emotional connectedness and epiphany we experience in nature.
While drawing
is the basis for all my work, the large oil paintings are the culmination of
everything I experience while on a painting trip through the landscape. for
me, their creation is cathartic - aesthetically, emotionally and spiritually.
My wish is that they bring this landscape experience to everyone.
